Texas A&M University - College Station - Assistant Professor, Islamic World History

The Department of History at Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of the Islamic World to begin in September 2010 or later. Applications from historians of all time periods, all areas, and all subfields of the history of the Islamic World, including minority communities, are welcome. The department especially encourages candidates whose work crosses cultural borders, employs a broad comparative perspective, takes a transnational approach, and/or uses gender as a form of analysis. Aarhus University, Department for the Study of Religion - Associate Professor in Arab and Islamic Studies

Subject to the availability of funding, the Faculty of Theology, Aarhus University is seeking to make a permanent appointment from 1 August 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter, to the post of Associate Professor in Arab and Islamic Studies.

The position will be located in the department for the Study of Religion. At the department for the Study of Religion, religion is studied as a global, cultural and social phenomenon. The research of the department covers a wide array of fields from empirical studies of historical and contemporary religions to more specific theoretical studies of religion. Arab and Islamic Studies is a central element of the department’s research, particularly that concerned with Phenomenology of Religion and History of Religions, and is taught at all levels. The associate professor must be able to demonstrate teaching skills in Islam, Arab history and contemporary Arab society and culture, and he or she will also be expected to contribute to the teaching of Arabic language, including classical Arabic. In addition, the preferred candidate will be able to demonstrate research skills in pre-modern Islam.

The post will cover research and teaching in the field of Arab and Islamic Studies and related subjects to the highest academic level, knowledge-sharing, and communication and dissemination of knowledge. There will also be an expectation of contribution to the general development of the department and the Faculty, e.g. through research projects within the main research areas and related subject areas represented in the Faculty, and to teaching on degree programmes across the Faculty. New York University, Religious Studies Program - Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow

New York University, the Religious Studies Program in the Arts and Science, invites applications for an appointment as an Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow. The appointment will be for one year beginning September 1, 2009, renewable annually for a maximum of three years, pending administrative and budgetary approval. Candidates must have completed a PhD no earlier than five years before the date of appointment, have a strong commitment to teaching and participating in the interdisciplinary Program’s activities. We seek applicants whose area of empirical research lies in the study of Islam. University of Oklahoma - Arabic Language Assistant Professor

University of Oklahoma announces a tenure-track position in Arabic at the level of Assistant Professor beginning August 2009 as part of its Language Flagship program. The position is a joint appointment in the University’s Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics and the School of International and Area Studies. University of Virginia - Assistant/Associate Professor of Religious Studies

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Religious Studies (tenure-track or tenure), with a specialization in Islam. Arizona State University - Assistant Professor of Islam

The Department of Religious Studies invites applications for a position in the study of Islam at the rank of a tenure-track assistant professor. Although the primary area of expertise may be in any historical period or in any region, the successful candidate will be able to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Islam, conduct research leading to scholarly publications and provide service to the department, university, and profession.

Brandeis University announces an opening for a tenure-track open rank position in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) to begin in the 2009-10 academic year. Specialization and departmental affiliation are open, but applicants must possess thorough knowledge of the languages, literatures, and histories of the classical period, and must be familiar with Islam's social history, major sects, principal schools of thought and forms of practice. The successful candidate must be able to teach the core introductory course: “Islam: Civilization and Institutions,” and should be able to teach courses that complement our current offerings, including those pertaining to medieval Islam and the relation of the classical tradition to modern and contemporary Islam. (The latter is a research focus of the University's Crown Center for Middle East Studies with which the candidate will be able to interact). Carleton College, Department of Religion, seeks a specialist in Islamic Studies for a full-time, tenure-track position at the junior level, to begin on September 1, 2009. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship

Connecticut College’s Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts (CISLA) has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow whose field of scholarly inquiry is Islam. This is a two-year appointment, commencing in fall 2009, that emphasizes both teaching and scholarship. The fellowship is one of five at the College supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

CISLA promotes global thinking across academic disciplines and encourages students to become politically concerned, socially engaged and culturally sensitive. In the Center’s certificate program, students enhance their major field with intensive foreign language study; a funded international internship; and a senior project that integrates their language proficiency, research interests, and experience abroad. The CISLA Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will be someone who can critically appraise the relationship between tradition and modernity in Islamic societies, draw connections among various aspects of Islamic culture across the globe, or illuminate interactions between Muslim and non-Muslim populations in an international setting. We are looking for someone who will complement the College’s strengths in Middle East Politics and Islam as a religion, so we welcome applicants trained in interdisciplinary Middle East or Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, Journalism, Anthropology, History, or Sociology.

Applicants must be on track to receive their degrees by July 1, 2009 or have done so in the last four years.

All Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows will attend bi-weekly workshops on teaching methods sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and give a yearly public presentation on a topic related to their research. Fellows may also advise students who are interested in their field of specialization and/or work with a faculty member on a collaborative research project. The CISLA Fellow will join the teaching team in the Center’s Gateway Course, “Perspectives on Modern Global Society,” held in the spring, participate in the senior seminar that is required of students returning from their overseas experience in the fall, help choose the incoming class, and otherwise participate in the life of the Center. He or she will also offer one or two specialized courses open to all Connecticut College students.

The Mellon Fellowships offer a stipend of $52,000 per year, plus benefits, as well as an additional stipend to help offset expenses for research, scholarly activities, and travel. Denison University - Religious Diversity and Pluralism in America

Denison University Department of Religion invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2009 in Religious Diversity and Pluralism in America. Teaching will include introductory, intermediate and advanced undergraduate courses that cover both the diversity of contemporary American religion and the ways different religious traditions (both “traditional” Catholic, Protestant and Jewish traditions and the “new immigrant” traditions) understand and respond to this diversity on philosophical, theological, ethical, historical and social levels. Ph.D. in the academic study of religion with the above specialization and relevant linguistic training are required. The Ph.D. fellowship will be awarded to an applicant who has successfully completed the requirements to begin her/his Ph.D. studies. Lake Forest College - Islam Post-Doc

Lake Forest College seeks applicants for a 2 year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Islamic Studies, funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). The Fellow will be based in the Religion Department, in conjunction with the Islamic World Studies Program (an inter-disciplinary program, under the direction of Dr. Ahmad Sadri, the James P. The Fellow will be expected to teach 3 courses per academic year, ranging from introductory courses in the Islamic religious tradition to advanced courses in the Fellow’s specialty. This amounts to half-time teaching. With the other half of his or her working time, the Fellow will be expected to conduct post-doctoral research and to share this with the ACM and other scholarly communities. The College will provide support for participation in conferences and colloquia as well as the mentoring and enrichment workshops associated with the ACM program. The Fellow will expand offerings in the Religion Department and contribute to the development of the College’s new Islamic World Studies Program, generously funded by grants from James P. Northern Arizona University seeks a scholar of Islamic Studies for a shared appointment as tenure-track assistant professor of religious studies and anthropology.
